Raising Chicks! Chirp chirp!

Good day everyone!

We had a fabulous week! We have done many new things.

First, we finished our swimming lessons! During our last lesson, we got to play in the waves!

- "I learned how to swim forwards using the flutter kick." -M
- "I learned how to do a somersault into the water!" -N & D
- "My favourite part was when we got to go into the diving tank for the 3rd time." -D
- "I loved it when I learned how to do a giant cannon ball!" - K
- "I loved when we jumped off of the diving board." -G & T

Did you know that our class is raising chicks?! Last week, we received eggs from a farmer named Mark. He gave us an incubator that is used for holding the eggs and keeping them warm. The eggs do not look like normal eggs that you buy from the store. They are different colours such as green, white, and brownish. The eggs also have brown markings on the shells. It will take 21 days for the eggs to hatch. Today we are on Day 10! Only 11 more days until they hatch!

We hope you enjoyed our blog post. See you next week!

Our Hearing and Sound Animal Research

Happy Friday Everyone!

Welcome to our awesome blog. We have had another busy week in Room 13. We are feeling confused with this weather!! Is it spring? Or is it winter?!

First, we finished our Ukrainian pysanky eggs. We drew designs and symbols on our eggs using coloured Sharpies. In the Ukrainian culture, the symbols tell a story. For example, we learned about symbols that mean memories, life, rain, center of the world and wildlife. Here are some pictures of our work.

Second, this week we started researching about how animals hear. In groups, we researched the unique ways that dolphins, owls, frogs, elephants and bats use their hearing and sound to survive. Here are some interesting facts that we have learned.
- "Owls can hear mice that are under the snow!" - D
- "Bats can hear their prey. They use echolocation for hearing their prey. " - S
- "Frogs don't have outer ears. They have tympanums, which are big, round, ear drums." - A&K
- "Elephants can hear with their trunk and their feet!" -J&T
- "Owls can hear up to 1200 Hz." - H&D

Next week is swimming lessons. Please remember to bring your towel, bathing suit and underwear to school.

Have a great weekend!

Sign Language Learning

Happy Friday!

We had a fabulous week back at school!

First, in our new inquiry, "Hearing and Sound," we are studying hearing loss. This week, we learned about sign language! Sign language is a way for people who have hearing loss to communicate. With Mrs. Premji, we learned the alphabet, how to spell our names and how to sign a basic conversation. Here is the video we watched to help us learn.

Next, we started on a new art project where we are making pysanky eggs like many Ukrainian people do during Easter. Here are some picture of our work. We started off with plastic eggs. We used paper mache to cover the eggs carefully. Next we will paint and decorate the eggs. Stay tuned to see pictures of our final products!

We also uploaded work onto our IRIS page this week. Please check it out!

We hope you have a fantastic weekend!
