Volunteer Tea

Welcome to our blog everyone! We had a pretty awesome week!

First, we performed for the Volunteer Tea. Some students in our class played the recorders (melody, harmony 1 and harmony 2), while others sang and played the tone chimes and xylophones. We performed the song "Hot Crossed Buns."

Next, we started writing a short story! We discussed the criteria for short stories. They must have characters, setting, beginning, middle, end, problem and a solution. We started by reading a few short stories in our class, such as "The Ninjabread Man" and "Thunder Boy JR."  Then we brainstormed many different problems that we could write our own stories about. Finally, we started planning our stories and writing our first draft. Next week, we will continue writing and editing!

Lastly, we started learning about the mealworm life cycle. Currently, they are in the larvae stage. Some are shedding their outer shell (molting). They will transform into a pupa and then a beetle. We observed the mealworms and did some sketching. We also learned how to classify animals into groups (mammals, amphibians, birds, fish, reptiles, insects). We are looking forward to our zoo field trip in a few weeks!!!

Hope you have a great weekend!

Volunteer Tea Placemats

Happy Thursday Everyone!

This week we began an new inquiry where we are exploring nests! Mr. Thelmo found some pigeon eggs and a nest on the roof. This had us wondering, "What is the perfect environment for birds to take care of their eggs?" We learned that an incubator is not always the most successful.

On Tuesday, we had a funeral and buried our 2 chick eggs that did not hatch. The students said some nice words about the eggs, and now we have said goodbye. Even though our eggs did not hatch, it was still an exciting experience for us, and we learned a lot about the chicken's life cycle.

This week Room 13 had an important for the Volunteer Tea. We made beautiful placemats of abstract flowers for the volunteers to enjoy at the tea next week! First, we planned the flowers we were going to create. Then, we painted them. After the paint dried, we added details with sharpies! Here are some pictures of our work.

Have a fantastic long weekend!

Sad News :(

Hi Everybody!

We have some very sad news this week. Our eggs have not hatched and we think that they have died inside of their eggs. We are going to wait over the weekend and see if there are any changes. When we did research, we learned that some eggs hatch on day 25, but we have not heard any noises or seen any movement in the eggs.

On Monday we had an assembly for Music Monday! We sang 5 different songs as a whole school!

Here are some quotes about our week:
- "I loved Music Monday because it felt really good singing the songs." -M
- "I like when we made the Mother's Day cards." -R
- "I learned how to say hello in different languages." - M
- "I don't want the chicks to die!" - E
- "I am really sad because we think the chicks are dying." -T

This week we finished our smilie poems and self-portraits. Here are some pictures of our fabulous work!

We hope that you have a splendid weekend! See you on Monday!

We are 21st Century Learners! We are using the laptops more and more to type our work. It is important for students to practice typing efficiently. This is a fun website to help us practice our typing skills.

Our Class Band

Good morning everyone!

Our week was filled with many different emotions. We were sad to hear that only 2 of our chicks are surviving inside of their eggs. Farmer Mark came for a visit on Tuesday. He candeled all of the eggs, but we could only see a chick moving and forming inside of two eggs. We are feeling excited because in 4 days, the remaining eggs should start to hatch! We are hoping that our two chicks stay healthy and strong! From our research, we know they are starting to turn yellow and form feathers. Their eyes and beaks are starting to form. Now the eggs do not need to be turned. We are listening carefully for peeping to begin!

In our Hearing and Sound inquiry, we designed our own instruments made from recyclable items. We were inspired by a video we watched called "The Recyclers." Here is the video we watched!

First, we made blueprints of our instrument designs. Then, we gathered materials from home and around the school. Finally, we started to build! Here are some pictures of our final products. We made a beautiful class orchestra, just liked in the documentary we watched!

This week we also enjoyed a performance from Quest Theatre!

Have a happy warm weekend! Stay tuned to see pictures of our simile art work that we have been working on :)
