The Last Week of September

Greetings Everyone!

This week we did lots of new things in Room 13!

First, we learned about Residential Schools. Residential Schools are schools that First Nations children were forced to go to, to learn the ways of the Europeans. We read two books, "Shi-shi-etko" and "Shin-Chi's Canoe" that taught us what it was like in Residential Schools. We felt depressed, sad, mad, and shocked after learning about this. We learn about Residential Schools so that we do not make the same mistakes in the future.
Friday is Orange Shirt Day. People are encouraged to wear orange shirts to honour Phylis, a
First Nation's girl who was forced to take off her new orange shirt when she arrived at a residential
school.

Also this week, the grade 3 students wrote the SLAs! Parents will learn more about the
SLAs at Parent Teacher conferences next week. Do not forget to sign up for a conference time!

Tomorrow is the Terry Fox Run! Please dress appropriately for the activity!

Happy Thursday!

Monsoons in India

Greetings everyone! We had a short, but action packed week in Room 13! Here are some things we have done.

First, we started learning about India! Did you know, India often has extreme weather storms called monsoons? During a monsoon there is lots of rain and wind. All of the rain often creates floods. We read a story about a monsoon in Mumbai, India. In the story the author explained that during monsoons, cars and buildings even flood! We imagine that a person's quality of life decreases during monsoons and other extreme weather. Here is a picture of a monsoon in India.

Second, every morning we practice our skip counting with different songs. These are some of our favourites. Check them out!

Lastly, we won the golden garbage can last week! YAY Room 13!

Have a great 3 day weekend!

Our First Blog Post!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to our blog! Here we will be sharing with you everything we explore, discover and learn in our classroom, as well as exciting events happening at school!

This week we began our inquiry about climate change. Here are some facts we have already learned:
- "Climate is the patterns of weather over a long period of time." - R
- "Burning coal to make electricity makes pollution."-N
- "Dumping trash in landfills creates greenhouse gases." -S/M
- "Using gas to make cars go creates pollution." -G
- "The entire world has gotten hotter from greenhouse gases." - D
- "Greenhouse gases change the climate overtime." - H

We looked at a variety of before and after pictures that show climate change. We felt sad, worried, shocked, upset, confused and mad when we saw the changes that have affected humans and wildlife over time.

Another activity we did this week was goal setting. We set an academic (learning) and behaviour goal for ourselves. We have posted our goals on our IRIS pages. Please take time to look at the goals we have created.

We had a great time at the pancake breakfast this week. Thank you to the Rotary Club for the fun and delicious event! Here are some pictures of us dressed up in our western wear!

We are looking forward to a great year in Rooms 13/15! Have a wonderful weekend!
