Learning about Ukraine
Hi Everyone!
We finally had a 5-day week of school! Here is an update of what we did this week.
First, we started learning about Ukraine! We began by watching our classmates presentations about Ukraine. Then, we watched a few videos about Ukrainian celebrations, and we read a Ukrainian folktale called, "The Mitten." In the story, there is a little boy named Nicki who looses his snow white mitten. Many different animals such as a bunny, mole, porcupine, bear, fox, mouse, badger and owl go inside of his mitten! Next week, we will be doing an art activity where we make psyanky eggs!
Secondly, we made ugly Christmas sweaters with our grade 5/6 buddies. We decorated paper sweaters using glitter, ribbon, bells, pompoms, stickers and more! Here are some pictures of our creations!
Lastly, we did some Christmas caroling in our class! Next week, our whole school is going to do caroling together! Also, next Thursday is pajama day! Our class is visiting the Christmas store on Monday morning.
Have a wonderful weekend!

The Popcorn Challenge!
Hello Everyone!
We had a fabulous and short week in Room 13! We had a lot of students away this week! We hope everyone is feel healthy and is back to school on Monday.
First, we started a new unit in science. We are working as junior engineers! Engineers plan, make blueprints, follow instructions, find and solve problems, work as a team, build and more! This week, we were given our first engineering challenge. We had to create a new popcorn bag for Cineplex Theatre. Our first step, was to plan and discuss our design. Then, we built prototypes. Next, we gave each other feedback. Finally, we tested the popcorn bags!
Here are pictures of our process and our final designs! The winners were the Pop-Tanic (ship shaped popcorn bag)!
Finally, we started instructional writing by teaching others how to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches!
Have a great long weekend!

The Last Week of November!
Hello Everyone!
Our week was fabulous and fun!
First, we have been learning about quality of life. Quality of life explains a person's feelings of health, safety, security, comfort and happiness. We read a book about a boy and his father who lived in an airport. The book was called, "Fly Away Home." Here is a video of the book. We discussed how their quality of life was good because they had food, water, family, friends and shelter. But, their quality of life could have been better if they had a home and beds to sleep in. We are now talking about the quality of life in different places around the world.
Next, we continued to work on our self portraits. First, we practiced rough drafts in our visual journals. Then, we drew good copies on white paper. After, we outlined our pictures using Sharpies. Finally, we painted using water colours! Stay tuned to see our final products!
Lastly, we watched our classmate's presentation about Peru! Here are some facts we have learned.
- "They make mats and clothing from llama and alpaca fur!" -D
- "They eat guinea pigs!!!!" - G
- "In the country, they trade items at a market." -A
- "Peru is called the potato country because they have so many potatoes!' - T
- "Some people live on the farms and some live in the city." -O
- "Some Peruvians live in the mountains." -D
We hope that you have an excellent weekend!

Country Research Project
Hello Everyone!
Thank you for visiting our blog. We had another action packed week!
First, Miss MacLeod was away from Monday-Wednesday this week. She was in Vancouver for a teaching conference. Ms. H was a guest teacher in our class while Miss MacLeod was gone.
Second, we spent lots of time working on our country research project. Our learning goal for the project is, "I can explain how the culture of my country makes it unique." Here are some interesting facts we have learned so far about Peru, India, Ukraine and Tunisia.
- "In Peru their clothing is very different than ours." - A
- "The food they eat in India is different." -S
- "Ukraine was founded in 1991." -D
- "In India they celebrate Holi and they throw coloured powder at each other." - J
- "Ukraine is close to Russia." -R
Lastly, we won the Golden Garbage Can for the 3rd time this week!!!! WOOHOO! Mr. Themo says we are the class that has won the most times this year!
Have a lovely wintery weekend!

Bio Poems and Self Portraits
Welcome everyone to our blog!
It was a chilly, short week in Room 13.
First, we finished our bio poems! In the poems, we described ourselves and what makes us each special! Here are some reasons why the students of Room 13 are unique:
- "I can talk another language." -A
- "I am a good video gamer." -M
- "I love Lego!" - D
- "I can run like Super Mario!" - G
- "I can make friends." - A
Then, we worked on sketching self portraits to go along with the good copies of our poems. We had a special visitor help us with this activity! Miss Nikki, Miss MacLeod's sister came in for our afternoon. Here are some self portraits from famous artists that we studied.
We decided that self portraits should:
- look realistic
- be detailed
- look similar to you!
Next week, we are going to work on our research projects of India, Peru, Ukraine and Tunisia!
Have a great 3 day weekend!

Remembrance Day
Hello Everyone!
We had another great week!
To honor Remembrance Day, we created poppy art and wrote cinquain poems. Cinquains are descriptive poems that have five lines. Here are some examples of our work. We also had a Remembrance Day Assembly at school. Remember to take some time this weekend to remember all of the people that lost their lives in war.
Next, we continued our geology work, and researched how rocks and minerals are used in our daily lives. Students may work on their presentations at home using GoogleDrive!
Last week we went through different waste bins and made tally charts to record the items were in the incorrect bin. This week we turned the tally charts into bar graphs. We made a checklist of the elements that must be included on a bar graph. Some students even challenged themselves to skip count by 4s on the Y-axis!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Our Hallo-Week!
Greetings Everyone!
This week was exciting and fun!
First off, we did our waste presentations to the school. To prepare for the presentations, we planned with our group members what we would say. Then, we practiced with our groups and in front of our class. We gave each other feedback to improve our work. In our presentations we talked about the 4 waste bins: refundables, organics, garbage and recycling. As a class, we made a target rubric and assessed ourselves on our presentation.
Here are some quotes about our presentations:
- "I was nervous presenting to the 5/6 class." - J
- "It was pretty hard to remember all of my lines!" -D
- "It was challenging to make eye contact." - M
- "I was happy because I got to present to my last year's class!" -T
- "I felt anxious to be in front of a big class, but after I felt brave and proud!" -K
Secondly, we examined some waste bins in the school. We recorded data with a tally chart. Next week, we will turn the tallies into graphs. You would not believe what we found in the recycling bin in Room 17/18! There was a squished bun, dried bread and juice boxes! We noticed there were MANY items in the wrong bins! We hope our presentations and videos help to teach the school where they should put their waste.
Lastly, we celebrated Halloween! Some of us wore costumes, and enjoyed the popcorn snack! We did learning with pumpkins! We estimated and counted the number of seeds inside different pumpkins. Some strategies we used were putting the seeds into groups and skip counting by 5s or 10s, or counting by 1s.
Have a great weekend!

Scientists in School
Hello Everyone,
This week was awesome and exciting!
First, we had an in-school field trip with Scientists in School! There were five different stations where we did activities and learned more about rocks and minerals! Here are some quotes about our experience.
- "I learned that graphite is in the lead of pencils." -J
- "It was fun learning about the different types of rocks!" -N
- "I loved the station with Mr. K where we scratched rocks with nails and tested them with vinegar to see if they reacted." - T
- "It was so much fun!" -D
- "We learned there are different layers to the soil (surface, topsoil, subsoil, and parent material)" -D
- "The afternoon was fantastic!" -O
- "I liked it when we got to make our own metamorphic rock out of clay." -M
This week we also finished our Rights of the Child art project. Here is a picture of our new bulletin.
Next, we noticed there is a problem in our school with the organics bin. There are not enough organics bins for the whole school! We asked Mr. Robinson, Mr. Thelmo, the office and Ms. Paull for help! We want to buy more organics bins for the school so that people are not throwing their organic waste in the garbage. Our job is to find out how much the organics bins will cost our school. Then, Mr. Robsinson will help us purchase them.
A reminder that next Tuesday is Halloween. Students may dress up in costumes that are appropriate for school (no weapons, masks, or scary costumes).
Have a great weekend!

Water Colour Art
Welcome to our blog everyone!
This week, we continued our Rights of the Child art project. We drew the good copy of our illustration on water colour paper. We used water colour pencil crayons to represent the different rights. Then, we carefully painted with water to give our illustrations a special effect. Stay tuned to see pictures of our final product!
In Room 13 we have a special job in the school! We take turns emptying the recycling and organics bins in the different classrooms. We thought this would be a great job because it helps to reduce climate change when waste is put in the correct bins! Some students in our class worked with Mr. Southworth to create a video about waste. Please watch this video and learn how to dispose of your waste properly.
Next week, we are excited for Scientists in School, which is happening on Monday afternoon! We will be learning more about Rocks and Minerals!
Have a great weekend!

Rocks and Minerals and The Rights of the Child
Hello everyone!
We had a short week of school, but that didn't stop us from doing lots of learning!
First, we started learning about the Rights of the Child. The rights were created so that every child in the world is happy, healthy and safe. There are some kids in the world that do not have their rights met (no healthy food, no clean water, no shelter, pollution in the air), so UNICEF is an organization that tries to help them. Then, each of us got a right that we are illustrating. Next week we are going to turn our pictures in water colour artwork.
Second, we started a new science unit called, Rocks and Minerals. We began working as junior geologists and we explored different kinds of rocks! Here are some things we noticed.
-"Some are shiny." - D
-"Some were glittery." - T
-"Some are dirty." -G
-"We noticed that the top of one rock was smooth and the bottom was rough." -K
-"I noticed that some rocks are see through." -E
-"I noticed that some rocks were different shapes." -G
Lastly, in math we worked on place value! We learned how to represent numbers in different forms such as expanded form, standard form, word form, and base 10 blocks. Here are some pictures of our learning.
Remember, Monday is a PD Day! Enjoy the long weekend!

Our Fun First Week of October
Hey Everyone!
How is your week going? Our week was wonderful! We are going to share some of our highlights with you.
First of all, we continued our exploration of India! We learned about a tradition in India called henna or mehndi.
- "Henna is a paste from a plant that dyes your skin." -T
- "People in India wear mehndi for special occasions like weddings." - J
- "Henna stays on your skin for days or weeks." -G
- "The bride wears henna and sometimes the groom does too." -D
- "You have to wait for the ink to dry before you wash it off and see your stained skin." -H
After we learned about this tradition, we decorated our own (paper) hands with mehndi art! Here are some pictures of our work.
Other facts we learned about India are:
- "Their main language is Hindi." -G/J
- "They use rickshaws for transportation." -A
- "Some of the trains in India do not have glass windows because it is so hot." -M
- "In some villages, they use newspaper to wrap groceries." -T
- "In a video we watched, kids were on a motorcycle without a helmet!" -K
- "Some wagons have protection at the top in case there are monsoons." -S
Second, in math, we have been working on our doubles! Please watch these songs to help practice!
Lastly, all of the grade 3/4s finished our feather art project! First, we painted different colours of the rainbow. Then, we traced and cut the feather pattern. After, we added some symmetrical designs to decorate the feather. We also added a wish we have for the world. We are so proud of our finial product. We cannot wait for you to see it at PT conferences.
Have a great long weekend!

The Last Week of September
Greetings Everyone!
This week we did lots of new things in Room 13!
First, we learned about Residential Schools. Residential Schools are schools that First Nations children were forced to go to, to learn the ways of the Europeans. We read two books, "Shi-shi-etko" and "Shin-Chi's Canoe" that taught us what it was like in Residential Schools. We felt depressed, sad, mad, and shocked after learning about this. We learn about Residential Schools so that we do not make the same mistakes in the future.
Friday is Orange Shirt Day. People are encouraged to wear orange shirts to honour Phylis, a
First Nation's girl who was forced to take off her new orange shirt when she arrived at a residential
school.
Also this week, the grade 3 students wrote the SLAs! Parents will learn more about the
SLAs at Parent Teacher conferences next week. Do not forget to sign up for a conference time!

Monsoons in India
Greetings everyone! We had a short, but action packed week in Room 13! Here are some things we have done.
First, we started learning about India! Did you know, India often has extreme weather storms called monsoons? During a monsoon there is lots of rain and wind. All of the rain often creates floods. We read a story about a monsoon in Mumbai, India. In the story the author explained that during monsoons, cars and buildings even flood! We imagine that a person's quality of life decreases during monsoons and other extreme weather. Here is a picture of a monsoon in India.
Second, every morning we practice our skip counting with different songs. These are some of our favourites. Check them out!
Lastly, we won the golden garbage can last week! YAY Room 13!
